Mr. Philip YU is a seasoned U.S. IP lawyer with over 20 years of experience in managing cross-border IP transactions, enforcement, and licensing. He holds a Juris Doctor (J.D.) from the George Washington University Law School and a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Electrical Engineering from the University of California, Irvine. He has both legal and technical backgrounds and is licensed to practice law in California and is a registered patent attorney with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

Mr. YU started his career at Rockwell Semiconductor Systems in California, serving as IP Counsel for six years. He then joined the DuPont Company, where he spent 14 years as Assistant Chief IP Counsel and IP Leader for Asia, overseeing regional IP management and strategic development. Later on, he became a Partner at Duane Morris LLP’s Shanghai office, focusing on cross-border legal practices.

He has been providing IP services to multinational corporations (MNCs) for a long time, specializing in managing cross-border patent litigation, formulating brand protection strategies, and negotiating IP transactions. He possesses extensive experience in managing cross-border patent litigation for MNCs, especially defending against patent infringement claims by Non-Practicing Entities (NPEs). He manages complex transactions such as technology transfer agreements and licensing deals. In patent portfolio management, he offers strategic guidance, organizes “innovation workshops” to uncover new marketable ideas, and develops plans to align local practice with global IP strategies. Additionally, he leads cross-functional teams across diverse regions, harmonizing legal procedures and operational practices to enhance cross-border innovation efficiency.

As a recognized industry expert, Mr. Yu served as Chair of the Anti-Counterfeiting Committee at the Intellectual Property Owners Association (IPO) from 2016 to 2017 and was consecutively listed in the World Trademark Review (WTR 300) as one of the “World’s Leading Corporate Trademark Professionals” from 2017 to 2020. He has been frequently invited as a speaker and panelist at the U.S. Ambassador’s IP Rights Roundtable, LES International conferences, and USPTO training programs in ASEAN. He also serves on the Board of Directors for the UC Irvine Alumni Association’s Shanghai Chapter.

Mr. Yu holds three U.S. patents for personal inventions and is fluent in both Mandarin and English. In his leisure time, he enjoys rowing, table tennis, pickleball, and hiking, balancing professional excellence with social engagement.
