1. Patent

In the first half of the year, the Office received 683,000 invention patent applications and 217,000 patents were granted. The top 3 domestic companies (excluding Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan) in terms of the number of granted invention patents were Huawei (2,772), OPPO (1,925), and BOE Technology (1,432).

As for reexamination and invalidation, 26,200 patent reexamination requests were accepted, and 25,700 cases were closed. Accepted invalidation requests amounted to 2,600, with 4,300 cases closed.

Meanwhile, a total of 29,500 PCT applications were accepted, with a year-on-year increase of 22.6%. The top three provinces (regions or cities) concerning received PCT application volumes are Guangdong (10,900), Beijing (3,800), and Jiangsu (3,300).

The respective examination periods for invention patents, utility model patents, and design patents are 20.3 months, 6.4 months, and 3.2 months.

2. Trademark

In the first half of the year, the number of trademark applications in the country was 4.284 million; while the number of trademark registrations was 2.629 million. By the end of June 2020, the number of valid registered trademarks in China reached 27.414 million.

A total of 166,000 applications for trademark review and adjudication were received, and 192,000 were closed.

The average examination period for trademark registration has stabilized within 4.5 months.

3. Intellectual property protection and utilization

In the first half of the year, the total number of administrative proceedings on patent infringement disputes from all provinces reached 5320.

Patent pledge financing amounted to 65.1 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 61%; while the total amount of trademark pledge financing was 20.2 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 8.8%.
